Tour of Detroit's Corktown Neighborhood - September 27, 2017
With expert guidance and commentary by SOAR faculty member Armando Delicato, SOAR members enjoyed an in-depth walking tour of Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. Featured stops included historic homes, Michigan Central Depot, Assemble Sound music studios, Ponyride Market entrepreneurial center, and Most Holy Trinity Church.
First Day of Spring Term - April 17, 2017
SOAR kicked-off an exciting new term on Monday, April 17th. The morning session featured the music and friendship of Dizzy Gillespie, presented by Berl Falbaum. In the afternoon, faculty member Mark Wenzel discussed images of women in film, and returning lecturer George Milne discussed piracy. Here are just a few of the eager attendees who participated.
The Whitney - September 28th, 2016
The historic Whitney Restaurant in Midtown Detroit was host to 50 SOAR members and guests on September 28, 2016. Housed in a 22,000 square foot mansion built by a lumber baron in 1894, the restaurant features 20 fireplaces, stained glass windows, an elegant menu....and a ghost! SOAR visitors enjoyed a traditional high tea, a tour, and a lecture about the building's haunted history from author Kathleen Tedsen.
Hindu Temple - August 9th, 2016
Hindu culture, art, religious practices and rituals were the subjects of a presentation for SOAR members and guests on August 9th at the Sri Venkateswara Hindu Temple and Cultural Center. Nearly 70 SOAR members and guests enjoyed a colorful and informative visit.
The Detroit Model Railroad Club
Nineteen SOAR members participated in a field trip to visit the Detroit Model Railroad Club and the Holly Hotel in Holly, Michigan. Housed in a former movie theater, the club features five levels of model railroad tracks with numerous outbuildings and extensive landscaping. The model is a work in progress, entirely built and operated by volunteers
